The JJ ECC803S (ECC83/12AX7) is an open sounding, robust and reliable tube. In a lot of situations this tube performs very well. Its design is based on the Tesla ECC803, which in turn is based on the Telefunken ECC83. Due to the large anode structure this tube can be susceptible to microphonics. Warning: Substitutes are given as a guide only - please refer to original manufacturers data sheets to ensure that a substitute is safe and appropriate for your application. ECC81 is 12AT7 medium gain pre-amplifying double triode. Can be also used as replacement for 12AX7 in many applications. Very smooth and warm sound. Very low microphonic. Good for phase inverters or reverb drivers.

Capacitances: system I. system II. The JJ ECC803S is my favorite preamp tube: more than ANOS Telefunken, ANOS Mullard, Ei, Sovtek 12AX7LPS, Chinese 12AX7 etc. The JJ ECC803S is lower gain than the JJ ECC83S and works beautifully, in combination with JJ EL84s, in a VOX AC4/15/30 top boost circuit.
JJ ECC803s would be an example. Higher gain tubes dont have much to do with 'metal' by the way. You're not going to get a substantial increase, unless you're going from a significantly lower gain tube like a AT7 or something. The JJ ECC83-S tube has several improvements in its construction from the old ECC83 version. From our review of this tube: "This tube sports a different plate design than found in most 12AX7's. When you look at them you can't help but think that they must be rugged and good for the musician on the road.

The JJ 5751 has all of the qualities we have come to expect from JJ Electronic, a nice tight low end, a natural open mid, a great harmonic structure and a sweet high end that is not brittle. The JJ ECC803S tube has wide and deep soundstage. Overall the sound is open and balanced from top to bottom, with a good deep bass. A customer reported that the JJ ECC803-S tube is very warm and rich with a golden glow in voices.
The JJ/Tesla ECC803s Gold pin version is a hi-performance 12AX7 that has a spiral wound filament to reduce noise and hum. The construction is different from the JJ ECC83 in that the plates are more conventional, but have a special heat dissipating fin that serves to improve efficiency and gain. I like the JJ ECC803 better than all of them in VOX top-boost tube amps with Celestion Blue alnico speakers. It has the clarity/transparency of a Telefunken but it is rounder/thicker/fuller sounding---no kidding. My ears do hear a significant difference between the non-gold pin version and the gold pin version.
A Comparison of Current Production 12AX7 Tubes. RCA and Sylvania first introduced the 12AX7 to the world in the late 1940s. Today, it is by far the most common preamp tube used for electric guitar amplification and there is an almost overwhelming supply of current production options to choose from. It has a bold character with a fair amount of harmonic density but remains very open sounding whether played clean or overdriven. The ECC83MG is a little more polite than the JJ ECC83S which is pretty aggressive. Tonally it fits very nicely right between the JJ ECC83S and JJ ECC803S. 12AX7 (ECC83) TUNG-SOL. The Ultimate 12AX7. Big, warm, and musical. High Gain, ultra-low microphonics, and superb linearity with a dynamic 3-D sound. The JJ-ECC83MG (Mid Gain) is a new tube from JJ which they say is a mid-gain version of the 12AX7 tube type. It has a little less gain than the JJ ECC83S tube but not as low gain as a 5751 tube. JJ ECC803s would be an example. Higher gain tubes dont have much to do with 'metal' by the way. You're not going to get a substantial increase, unless you're going from a significantly lower gain tube like a AT7 or something.
