The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts, named for the artist Millard Sheets, is a gallery for Los Angeles-based artists which is located on the Pomona fairgrounds at Fairplex. The Center was built in 1937 and is dedicated to art and artists solely from Los Angeles County. The Scripps exhibition parallels another exhibition that celebrates the hundredth anniversary of Millard Sheets's birth, Tapestry of Life: The World of Millard Sheets, which will be seen at the Los Angeles County Fair from September 7 to September 30. The exhibition is directed by Tony Sheets, the artist's son, and selected by Janet Blake.
The Millard Sheets Art Center first began as the Fine Arts Program of the Los Angeles County Fair in 1922. The 20,000+ square-foot art center was built in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration to house the program, the first major gallery dedicated solely to art in Los Angeles County. The Millard Sheets Library regularly exhibits items from its Special Collections, especially from the Artists' Books Collection. Check the display case at the library entrance. While Sheets may have been encouraged to create such cityscapes by his early teacher, Theodore Modra (1873-1930 ... Millard Sheets (1907-1989) was a watercolorist, painter, muralist, educator and architectural designer in California. Sheets was a graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute, where he later taught one of the first watercolor classes. He was a professor and chairman at Scripps College in Claremont for 26 years.
